The PetSafe® Microchip Cat Flap reads the most common type of microchip implanted in cats – FDX-B (15-digit). The Hub links the cat flap to the Sure Petcare app, allowing you to track your cat’s movements in and out of the house and monitor any changes in behaviour, creating a greater connection with your cat and a deeper level of pet care. The cat flap can be programmed for up to 32 cats and is powered by four AA batteries that should last up to a year. This puts them at a huge advantage over a normal, non-chipped flap – particularly if your cat is being bullied or you have a greedy, six-dinner Sid living nearby.
Once your pet has been registered, the flap will only open for saved microchips and will send statistics about your companion’s movements straight to your phone. With a learning capacity for a whopping 40 microchips, this PetSafe Microchip Cat Flap has easily the biggest memory of any cat flap on our list, and is therefore among the best options for cat shelters and boarding catteries. This enables you to set different permissions for different pets as well as time limits, so younger cats can spend increasing amounts of time outdoors, or small dogs who also use the flap can be kept from going outdoors at night, for example. Unsurprisingly, the key difference between SureFlap’s basic model and the Cat Flap Connect and is that the latter is connected.It’s a really simple cat flap to programme, with just the push of a button and an LED indicator that flashes to let you know the microchip has been registered. Microchipping your cat by inserting a tiny chip into your pet is one of the easiest ways to keep it safe.In my time so far with the Sureflap Microchip Cat Flap, I can only think of one drawback, other than the higher cost of entry. If you’re going to be out, you can share permissions with your friends so that they can keep an eye on your cats and control their comings and goings.
