About this deal

Having said that the tone deaf would struggle, the game is a little forgiving when it comes to exact tuning. A long running series of compilation albums that rounded up all the latest releases onto one handy disc, almost everyone had at least a few at some point - even if they did hold slightly less appeal when we moved on to obscure piano playing women and angsty grunge. Players who keep up with the latest musical trends will be pleased with the selection of titles in this game as there is a heavy pop / dance influenced soundtrack that was mostly released after 2013. Well, that all depends on your age, likes, number of friends you have and desire to make a fool of yourself! Unfortunately, there is no incentive to really play the Career mode as there are no extras to be unlocked by progressing, so it’s just for the bragging rights I’m afraid.

Instead, I sit there wearing gaming headphones, all sound being fed through there as the picture in the background wordlessly mouths Meghan Trainor's "All About The Bass". If you do play this element of the game in solo mode prepare to try and foster a split personality as the swapping between vocalists can be a challenge, for instance from the female to male vocals on Eliza Doolittle’s ‘Pack Up’ or singing to rapping on Tinie Tempah track ‘Written In The Stars’. This is especially problematic when the song has a high percentage of high notes, like Sia's "Chandelier".The gameplay is just as you would expect: music videos play on the screen, while the lyrics appear and light up as you're supposed to sing them. There are plenty of game modes to try and a presentation that is friendly for karaoke novices, especially when there is no fail option to discourage people before they've even begun. If you haven’t had experiences of such, usually drink-fuelled nights if you’re an adult, you have to match your actions with an avatar on the screen which acts as your mirror image, with little images of upcoming dance moves scrolling across the screen to prepare you for your next move.

It’s certainly not two perfect elements happily meeting, but neither is it jack of all trades, master of none. Its wide variety of modes make it a hugely entertaining release to play with friends or by yourself, and the vast range of songs ensures that you'll always have something to sing. There are some improvements to be made but with this the only real karaoke option on Xbox One, if you want to sing this is the only choice you have…for NOW. Be warned though, ‘Elimination’ is super tough with my maximum sing through in this mode only ever managing to last 30 seconds or so. Whether you're in the mood for Jess Glynne or Lorde, this title has you covered – and that's what makes it Charli XCXellent. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. With no difficult options on the game it’s up to you to mangle your vocals enough to match whether you’re male or female, deep or high voiced. I first tried Club Can’t Handle Me and cried, but settling for the more sedate ‘Pack Up’ made me feel much better in myself! ABOUT USCovering only the best in the latest news and reviews for all things Xbox related - Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Xbox Game Pass - we aim to be a one stop hub for all your Xbox needs, without all the useless guff that you really don’t want to know about.
