About this deal

The monarchs of the constituent states within the German Empire, most importantly Ludwig III of Bavaria, Frederick Augustus III of Saxony and Wilhelm II of Württemberg, soon abdicated. The narration was superb, I often forgot that I wasn't listening to a speech from the author himself.

Our country needs to help build a new system that delivers justice for all – but this can only happen if historic wrongs are recognised as part of our national story. Abolition of absolutist monarchy in favor of limited government under constitutional monarchy is a less radical form of anti-royalism that has succeeded in some nations that still retain monarchs, such as Sweden, Spain, and Thailand. In this book, Graham Smith argues that the assumptions that allow monarchy to continue – that it is popular, profitable and does no real harm – are all false. Smith questions the financial costs of having the monarchy and contrasts that with the benefits it is supposed to bring.Though polling consistently showed a majority in favour of a republic, the result of the referendum was attributed to a split among republicans between those who supported the presented model and those who supported a directly elected president.

Smith quotes a number of countries that have shed their royalty (or equivalent), but the list has omitted, for example, Greece, Italy, Romania and Russia. Many of the Korean royals were forcibly re-educated in Japan and forced to marry Japanese royalty and aristocrats to meld the ruling families of the two empires. For those of you who are soft monarchists or curious about the subject the book will remind you that the Windsors have an efficient business model pumping out PR to support their continuance, this should not go unchallenged in a democracy.
